Prevent Home Accidents With Toddler Safety Training

We all want our children to be safe. But are we teaching them the right message so that they are prepared? The PreSafe products are designed with preschoolers in mind, that is age 2 and up. In their Preschool Age Training Safety book they focus on several key areas for safety for your child that includes: Meaning of Signs, Water Safety, Home Safety, Road Rules, and Fire Safety and What to Do If you Are Lost. At the end of the book, there is also a great Safety Rules Exam to quiz your child on the safety rules. The book also includes stickers to print out and “NO” signs to put in areas of potential danger like a hot iron or sharp objects. Kids are included to put up their Danger signs where they think they could get hurt. The book also includes lots of fun activities like circling items that are dangerous and memorization games like learning 911 and care giver’s phone numbers. There are great sections on gun safety and fire safety as well as ways to prevent getting injured like wearing a helmet or a life jacket. I also loved the emphasis they put on a child of this age to learn their name, their parents’ name and their phone number in the event they get separated from their parents. The quiz at the end is fantastic and there is even a certificate to print out for your child once they successfully completed the Training Safety. What a wonderful idea!

A three-year-old is being hailed as a hero for saving his aunt’s life in Wilmington, Del., this week.

Tyrone Copeland Jr. was playing near his aunt in Speakman Park at 3 p.m. Friday when his aunt began to have a seizure. Instead of sitting idly by, the toddler ran across the park to bystanders, told them about the seizure and said they should call 911.

Tyrone told Paula Thomas that his aunt was “laying there and she’s had a seizure and her mouth was closed,” Thomas told WPVI-TV, ABC’s Philadelphia station. She and another bystander then scrambled to follow the little boy back across the park to his aunt.

“This is something that a 3-year-old is saying,” said Officer Mike Ivey, a spokesman for the Wilmington Police Department, emphasizing how impressive it is for a child Tyrone’s age to communicate so well.

When police arrived, the toddler was back at his aunt’s side. He told them his name, his aunt’s name and his address. His aunt, Deneene Copeland, was unable to speak and disoriented because of the seizure, Ivey said.

“He is just amazing because he knew his name, he knew his address, and he told us concisely what was wrong and where to go,” Thomas said.

Deneene was transported to a nearby hospital and returned home that evening. She had suffered seizures in the past, but police did not know the details of her medication condition.

The neighborhood policing unit is expected to have a ceremony in the toddler’s honor next week, where he’ll get a certificate of accommodation, Ivey said. It’s not yet clear when that ceremony will be.

“I didn’t even know he was able to do that,” said Tyrone Copeland Sr., the toddler’s father.

CAPE TOWN – The Red Cross Children’s Hospital said on Wednesday that at least half the number of children they treated, were injured in car accidents.

Professor Allistair Millar said he sees over 10, 000 patients every year, and is concerned about the number of children who are knocked by vehicles.

He said what was even more concerning was that during a survey conducted by the hospital, the vast majority of the children who were driven to the healthcare centre were not strapped in.

Millar said more than 700 children who were treated were involved in car accidents.

“Half of those children are from motor vehicle crashes, and in those half, 752 of the 1011 were pedestrians.”

Many of these patients were younger than eight-years-old, and did not look carefully before crossing the road.

“We admit about one very seriously injured child to our intensive care unit per week, that adds up to about 50 per year. When I say seriously injured, I mean brain injuries or an injury severe enough that they unable to breathe on their own.”

Drishya Nair
First Posted: Sep 06, 2012 10:11 AM EDT

After a recent trail of accidents, doctors are warning parents against laundry and dishwasher detergent liquitabs and calling for childproof packaging.

In just a span of 18 months, five separate cases of toddlers swallowing the capsules have been reported where the youngest child was 10 months old and the kids were under the age of 2. Apparently, all the children, while being admitted to the hospital in Glasgow were emitting high pitched wheeze (stridor) indicative of a blockage in the airway.

According to authors, all liquitabs contain strong alkaline cleaning agents, which can destroy tissues and cause severe inflammation. This can result in airway blockage and lung damage, which can even be fatal.

While the eldest of the five children was given antibiotics and steroids for treatment, the other four children required intubation for several days to treat swelling and ulceration. One child also needed surgery.
Although in all five cases, all the children were able to recover, the accidents had a catastrophic impact on the children as well their families, the authors pointed out.

Statistics show that these five are not the only such cases reported. Apparently, the National Poisoning Information Service received 647 phone calls and almost 4000 online searches about the eating/swallowing of the contents of liquid detergent capsules, from healthcare professionals last year, Medical Xpress reported.

The authors noted that most liquitabs do not come in childproof containers and to comply or to not comply with standards of safety packaging is currently voluntary.

“To help prevent future potentially life threatening injuries, improved safety warnings and childproof packaging are urgently required,” they said, and added that they have already written to manufacturers alerting them of the issue.

Emphasizing that parents have an important part to play in taking safety measures for the children: “Dishwasher and washing machine liquitabs are now a common finding in most homes, but unfortunately, seem very attractive to young children due to their bright colouring and soft sweetie-like texture. We feel that the increasing trend in liquid detergent capsule ingestion poses a significant public health issue,” they add.

Scraped Knees and Bruises – Injuries to Children Occur While mums are Busy

Four out of ten mums admit their children have been injured around the house while they themselves were busy cooking or cleaning

8th September 2012

Hectic lifestyles mean seven in ten mums are forced to regularly leave their children to play unsupervised while they carry out household chores, according to a new study of 2,000 mums.

The hard-hitting report also revealed another seven out of ten mums admit it is impossible to keep an eye on their child and still keep the house clean and tidy.

The figures emerged in a study compiled by Lindam to launch its Safety Day on September 6th 2012, which aims to raise awareness of the number of childhood accidents in the home.

Claire Rayner, spokeswoman for Lindam said: “Many accidents experienced by young children in the home come about because mum is understandably not able to keep a constant watch.

“There is increasing pressure on modern mums to be available at any moment for their children, while also being responsible for running the household and ensuring domestic life goes to plan for the whole family.

“She can’t be in several places at once and the results show that, it only take a minute for an accident to happen. It’s therefore about using safety productsto make the home as accident-proof as possible and allow mums at least some peace of mind,” she said.

The study found that a third of children have fallen off the sofa or tripped over in the garden, while an unlucky fifth has slipped on a floor, shut their fingers in a door or hit their head on a sharp corner.

One in six has fallen down the stairs and the same number has been hurt from a fight with siblings.

It’s key from these findings that a minute can really make all the difference and despite parents keeping an eye on their children, there just isn’t enough hours in the day to keep watch 24 hours.

The most common time for an accident to occur was found to be when Mums were busy cooking the evening meal, while being on the phone or having to deal with older siblings were also main distractions most likely to lead to an accident when Mum’s back was turned.

Most accidents involving young children took place in the living room, followed by the garden and bedroom.

Indeed, eight out of ten admit they often leave their child to play unsupervised around the home so they can get on with jobs around the house, but an attached one in five say they’d never dream of leaving their youngest out of sight.

Unfortunately, relying on extra help is hard –a third of mums say they can’t leave their youngest with older siblings, while the same number wouldn’t ask an available grandparent to help out.

One in three will additionally experience conflict with their partner when it comes to keeping an eye out on the kids – a quarter say it causes friction in the relationship.

Comment on this Article

In fact, a third of Mums say their partner is much guiltier of not keeping a proper eye on the kids than they are, while one in ten say their partner has no idea how hard they have to work during the day whilst managing the kids and juggling domestic life.

Claire continued: “It’s key from these findings that a minute can really make all the difference and despite parents keeping an eye on their children, there just isn’t enough hours in the day to keep watch 24 hours.

“It’s so easy and quick to put in place some very simple safety equipment such as stair gates, corner cushions and cupboard locks to ensure that parents can rest a little easier knowing that their children are protected.

“We have launched our first Safety Day as we are committed to reducing childhood accidents in the home and we feel it’s these small but important steps that can go a long way to reducing the amount of childhood accidents in the home,” she added.

Did you know most deaths caused by fire occur between 10PM-6AM when you and your family are sleeping? This fact is startling to many people in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. A smoke detector is the only item you can depend on to wake you from your sleep, giving you and your family time to escape your home.<br />
Location, testing and maintenance are the three key items to help protect your home and family members. The best place for your smoke alarm is on every level of your home, outside every bedroom and on the ceiling or upper part of the wall. You should check the alarms every six months, preferably once a month, by simply pressing the test button with your finger. You should maintain the alarms by replacing the batteries at least once a year, and keeping the alarms clean.<br />
Please follow these three simple steps to help better protect you, your family and your home. You do not want to lose all your belongings, or worse yet, a life.<br />

Most Fatal Child Battery Swallowing Accidents Due To Tiny Batteries

(CBS News) Small batteries may pose a fatal threat to your child, warns a new report published by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

From 1997 to 2010, approximately 40,000 emergency room visits for children under age 13 were due to the consumption of batteries. In the cases where the battery was identified (69 percent), more than half of them – 58 percent – were button batteries.

Fourteen of the cases, which involved kids from 7 months to 3 years, were fatal. The 12 cases in which battery type was known involved the small, coin-sized batteries.

The report was published in the Aug. 31 edition of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR).

A May 2012 study in Pediatrics also found that there had been an increase of emergency room visits due to the tiny batteries. The 20-year study from 1990 to 2009 revealed that there were about 66,000 battery-related emergency department visits by U.S. children under 18, and battery-related injuries had doubled in the two-decade time period.

Battery consumption symptoms involve vomiting, abdominal pain, fever, diarrhea, respiratory distress and dysphagia or difficulty swallowing. This makes it especially hard to diagnose what the problem is, especially if the caregiver didn’t see the child consume the battery.

What makes the small items so dangerous, however, is that they can cause serious burns due to a buildup of the chemical hydroxide in just two hours, according to WebMD. They can also leak a corrosive chemical called alkaline electrolyte. Researchers identified the 3-volt lithium, coin-size batteries that are less than or equal to 20 mm as the most common culprit.

Although the CPSC requires batteries to be not accessible by children in toys intended for kids under 3 and in all toys with small batteries for children under 12, three of the cases involved a child swallowing a battery from a device not intended for children. The researchers urged for strong safety standards to childproof battery access across all items, childproof battery containers and for more public and healthcare provider education on the subject.

“This is a problem we have known about because of all the electronic devices people have,” Dr. Amanda Porro, a pediatrician at Miami Children’s Hospital, who was not involved with the report, said to HealthDay.

She stated it’s the caregivers’ responsibility to keep batteries away from their children, but if an accident happens, they need to seek immediate help.

“If a parent sees a child swallow a battery, they need to go to the emergency room straight away because within two hours there can be significant damage – it’s a real emergency,” she added.

With the start of a new school year, school safety is heavy on the minds of parents–which these days may mean worrying about possible violence at school.

But studies show school-age children are nine times more likely to be unintentionallly injured—on the playground or elsewhere—than to be victims of violence at school, according the National Safe Kids Campaign (Safe Kids USA). The group estimates that each year 2.2 million children ages 14 and below are injured in school-related accidents.

School-related accidents can be prevented, if parents prepare students and stay on the lookout for potential hazards. Here’s a list of safety tips from Safe Kids, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Maryland Safe Routes Program:

Walking to and from school:

Plan a route ahead of time. Whether headed all the way to school or to the bus stop, plan a route with the fewest street crossings, and choose intersections with crossing guards, if possible.

Do a practice walk to school with your child. Instruct them to stay away from vacant lots, fields, parks or other places with few people around.

Teach children (on foot or bike) to obey all traffic signals, traffic signs, officers and crossing guards.

Don’t let your child walk alone. Have them walk with a brother or sister, friend, neighbor or other family member.

Teach children never to talk with strangers, or accept a ride. (Remind them a “stranger” can also be someone you know but not well, or someone you know but don’t trust).

Teach your child to arrive at the bus stop early. When the bus arrives, remind them to to stay out of the street until it comes to a complete stop and to watch out for cars. Tell your child not to bend down in front of the bus to tie shoes or pick up objects (as the driver may not see them before starting to move).

Riding or driving to school:

Drop off (and pick up) children as close to the school as possible. When dropping off, don’t drive away until you see they are inside the schoolyard or building.

Remind children to stay seated at all times and keep their heads and arms inside the bus. Also remind them to wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before getting up, and to cross the street 10 feet (or “10 giant steps”) in front of the bus.

Make sure the child wears a helmet if they ride a bike to school. Research indicates that a helmet can reduce the risk of head injury by up to 85 percent. For a motor scooter, add sturdy shoes, knee pads and elbow pads. (In Maryland, helmets are required by law for everyone under age 16, on a bike, motor scooter, or even skates).

Make sure your child knows their home phone number and address. Your child should also have your work number, the number of another trusted adult and know to dial 911 for emergencies.

Adults should also take steps, to create safe walking and bicycling environments: (tips from the Maryland Safe Routes Program)

Choose neighborhood schools within walking and bicycling distance from your home.

Use sidewalks or bike paths that connect homes with schools.

Make sure crossing a street is child-friendly (with school crossing guards, raised medians and/or traffic and pedestrian signals).

Alert drivers near schools to the presence of students (on foot or bicycle), and the need to slow down.

Use traffic calming devices installed and/or police enforcement, where needed.

Make sure pathways are accessible for all students, with or without disabilities.

Work with law enforcement and local officials, to enforce school zone safety and identify changes to improve walking and bicycling conditions around schools.

Once at School:

Check out your child’s school playground equipment, looking for hazards such as rusted or broken equipment or unprotected surfaces. The ground area beneath should be covered with wood chips, mulch, sand, pea gravel, mats or fiber material to prevent head injury from falls. Report any hazards to the school.

Make sure that the school anchors soccer goals into the ground so they won’t tip over and possibly crush a child.

Teach children proper playground etiquette: No pushing, shoving, or crowding (or bullying).

Give your child some bully-coping strategies (in advance). Teach children not give in to a bully’s demands, but instead to walk away or tell the bully to stop; or if that doesn’t work, talk to the teacher.

Avoid drawstrings (on hoods, or neck of jackets and sweatshirts). Drawstrings at the waist or jacket bottom should be no more than three inches long, to prevent being caught in vehicle doors or on playground equipment.

Check that your child’s school has up-to-date information on recalled toys and other children’s products. Schools, daycares and parents can get recall information by fax, email, or by regular mail free of charge, by calling the Consumer Product Safety Commission hotline (800-638-2772), or visiting www.cpsc.gov.
